Greenblatt on Sendak--and Sendak and Shakespeare

Sendak knew Shakespeare as well as any professor.

Greenblatt does not talk here about Sendak's intention to draw the cover pictures for a set of discs of Shakespeare's plays. I remember the quite astonishing endowment he gave Bottom. That I think was the end of that enterprise.

I remember also Sendak's interest in the way one of the Greenblatt sons ("Noah," is it?) approached--warily, from a safe distance, then risked closer movement.
