Ann Jefferson's Worship of Paul de Man Cannot Wholly Destroy the Reputation of the TLS

One of the better excuses of the many excuses Ann Jefferson makes for her hero (the Anne referred to being the wife of de Man, who had remarried bigamously):

"When an anonymous letter (presumably from Anne) asserted that de Man's past was not what he had led the university to believe, he was obliged to provide an account of himself which contained a number of falsehoods."

No, no, Ms Jefferson, he was not obliged to provide an account of himself which contained falsehoods. He just could not write many sentences which did not contain falsehoods of one sort or another.
