A Confidence Man Impersonating First Cousin Andrew Neel Bell--Watch Out for Him!

The spelling "hight" is an acceptable variant.

"In 1880 a man came to Independence [California, Inyo County] and asked assistance from the Masonic lodge. It was given him, and he was generously cared for. During his stay he got a list of the names of members of the lodge here, and ever since he has been roaming all over the country, visiting other lodges. At various times and places he has assumed the names of Robert Love, A. N. Bell and other members of Inyo Lodge, No 221, F. and A. M. Lately this fellow has been heard of in the East, still practicing the same deception. The man is now aged 55 or 60 years, of medium hight and weight, gray-haired, walks with a slight limp and has a smooth address. Officers of Masonic lodges and the brethren generally should beware of the impostor." Inyo Independent, reprinted in Santa Cruz Sentinel 28 April 1885.
